Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse – Acadia National Park

Bass Harbor Head Light, also known as Bass Harbor Lighthouse, is a historic lighthouse located in Acadia National Park on the coast of Maine. It was built in 1858 to guide ships safely into Bass Harbor and protect them from the rocky coastline. The lighthouse is located in the southwest corner of Mount Desert Island, offering a unique and picturesque view to visitors.

The lighthouse tower is made of brick and is 37 feet tall. The white tower is accented with black trim and a black lantern room at the top, which houses the original fourth-order Fresnel lens. The lens was manufactured by Henri-LePaute and is still in use today, shining a bright beam of light that can be seen for miles out to sea.

The lighthouse keeper’s house is attached to the tower and was originally built to provide a home for the lighthouse keeper and their family. There is no public access to the lighthouse, but restrooms are located on the grounds near the parking area.

The grounds surrounding the lighthouse are well-maintained and offer a picturesque setting for visitors to enjoy. The rocky coast and rolling hills provide a beautiful backdrop to the lighthouse, making it a popular spot for photographers and nature lovers.

Bass Harbor Head Light is a popular stop for those visiting Acadia National Park. The lighthouse is known for being a great spot to watch the sunrise and sunset, offering breathtaking views of the changing colors of the sky and sea.

In addition to its stunning beauty, Bass Harbor Lighthouse is a symbol of the importance of maritime safety and the role lighthouses have played in guiding ships safely to shore for centuries. It stands as a testament to the ingenuity and hard work of those who built and maintained it, ensuring the safety of sailors and ships for generations to come.

Bass Harbor Lighthouse is a must-visit destination for anyone visiting Acadia National Park. Its combination of historical significance, stunning beauty, and unique location make it a truly special place that should not be missed. Whether you are a photographer, a history buff, or simply someone who appreciates the beauty of the coast, Bass Harbor Lighthouse is sure to leave a lasting impression.
